Country USA, Boston, Massachusetts Experience 40 yrs Annual return 29.2%

Bio & context

Legendary fund manager who turned Fidelity Magellan into the world's best-performing mutual fund through common-sense investing.

Peter Lynch managed the Fidelity Magellan Fund from 1977 to 1990, growing it from $18 million to $14 billion in assets while delivering average annual returns of 29.2%—more than double the S&P 500. Lynch popularized the concept of investing in what you know, finding ten-baggers (stocks that return 10x) in everyday companies like Dunkin' Donuts, Hanes, and Taco Bell. He classified stocks into six categories (slow growers, stalwarts, fast growers, cyclicals, turnarounds, asset plays) and recommended individual investors leverage their natural advantages over Wall Street professionals. After retiring at age 46 to spend more time with family, he wrote several influential investing books and continued as a philanthropist and occasional Fidelity advisor.

Philosophy in their own words

Invest in what you know. The best stock ideas come from your daily life. Individual investors have advantages over professionals if they do their homework.

Approach & method

Bottom-up stock picking, focusing on company fundamentals and growth prospects. Emphasizes the PEG ratio (P/E to growth rate). Looks for undiscovered companies before Wall Street finds them. Recommends portfolio diversification across different stock types.

Key strategies

  1. 1. Invest in What You Know: Find opportunities in your daily life (shopping malls, restaurants, products you use)
  2. 2. The PEG Ratio: P/E divided by growth rate should be under 1.0 for value
  3. 3. Stock Categories: Classify stocks as slow growers, stalwarts, fast growers, cyclicals, turnarounds, or asset plays
  4. 4. Ten-Bagger Hunting: Look for stocks that can return 10x, not just 10%
