Extended guide
Overview
NinjaTrader is a specialized trading platform and broker for futures, with a strong focus on advanced tools. Founded in 2003 and headquartered in the United States, NinjaTrader serves both retail and professional day traders. Dutch clients are served by a separate European entity (see Regulation & Safety). The platform is popular among active traders who prioritize precision, speed, and customization in their trading strategies.
One of NinjaTrader's standout features is its suite of tools, including advanced charting, algorithmic trading options, and backtesting. These make it appealing for traders who want a high level of control and insight into their trades. Commissions start at $0.09 per micro contract per side on the Lifetime plan ($1,499 one-time); exchange, clearing and NFA fees come on top.
NinjaTrader focuses on futures, an asset class that falls outside the U.S. Pattern Day Trading (PDT) rule, which applies to stock trading in the U.S. This mainly matters for U.S.-based traders; for traders in the Netherlands the rule is not relevant. No minimum deposit is stated, and there are desktop, web and mobile platforms. Futures use leverage: you can lose more than your initial investment, so they are not suitable for everyone.
Regulation & Safety
NinjaTrader is supervised, but supervision does not protect you against trading losses. In the United States, NinjaTrader Clearing, LLC is registered with the CFTC as a futures commission merchant and is an NFA member (NFA ID 0309379). Dutch clients are served by Payward Europe Digital Solutions (CY) Limited, which trades as NinjaTrader and is authorised and regulated by the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) under licence number 342/17.
Which client-money and investor-compensation rules apply depends on the entity you contract with. We could not confirm these details for the European entity on NinjaTrader's own pages. Read NinjaTrader's Risk Disclosures before you open an account. No scheme protects you against trading losses.
Also note the recent enforcement history. In September 2024 the CFTC ordered NinjaTrader Clearing, LLC to pay a $750,000 civil monetary penalty plus $233,425 in restitution over inadequate emergency-handling procedures and supervision of employees. In 2025 the NFA fined the firm $250,000 for an inadequate anti-money-laundering program and supervision failures. Weigh this when assessing the broker.
Fees & Commissions
NinjaTrader's costs depend on the plan you choose. On the Lifetime plan ($1,499 one-time), the commission is $0.09 per micro contract per side ($0.59 for standard contracts). The Monthly plan ($99 per month) charges $0.29 and $0.99, the Free plan $0.39 and $1.29. Higher-commission plans can add up for frequent traders. Exchange, clearing and NFA fees come on top.
You need market data for live prices. For CME data (non-professional), Level I costs $12 per month for all four exchanges ($4 per exchange) and Level II $48 per month ($16 per exchange); professional users pay $156 per month per exchange. NinjaTrader also lists a clearing fee of $0.19 per contract, order routing of $0.25 per contract (Rithmic) and a $35 monthly fee on Free plans that log in but make no live trade ($25 on older legacy plans). Incoming wire transfers have no fee; a withdrawal by wire costs $30 (domestic) or 30 units of the originating currency (international). Currency conversion costs 1%.
NinjaTrader offers three plans: Free, Monthly, and Lifetime. Free has no monthly fee and the highest commissions. Monthly costs $99 per month with lower commissions. Lifetime is a $1,499 one-time payment with the lowest commissions of the three. The upfront cost only pays off if you trade enough contracts.
Check your own trading volume to decide which plan and data package fit you best, and count all costs, not just the commission.
Trading Platform
NinjaTrader's trading platform is one of its defining features, offering a range of tools designed for serious traders. The platform is available as desktop, web, and a mobile app (Android and iPhone). NinjaTrader lists no native Mac desktop app; Mac users can log in to NinjaTrader Web from a browser.
The desktop platform is highly customizable and includes advanced charting tools that allow traders to analyze market trends with precision. Users can access a wide range of technical indicators, create custom indicators, and utilize drawing tools to enhance their chart analysis. The platform also supports algorithmic trading, enabling traders to develop, test, and deploy automated trading strategies.
One of the unique features of NinjaTrader is its backtesting and market replay functionality. These tools allow traders to test their strategies using historical data and simulate real-time trading conditions. This is particularly valuable for traders who want to refine their strategies before deploying them in live markets.
The mobile and web platforms provide a more streamlined experience, with essential trading features and real-time market data. While these versions are not as feature-rich as the desktop platform, they are convenient for traders who need to monitor their positions and execute trades on the go.
Despite its robust capabilities, NinjaTrader has a steep learning curve, especially for beginners. The platform's extensive features and customization options can be overwhelming at first, but the company provides educational resources and customer support to help users get up to speed.
Who Is NinjaTrader Best For?
NinjaTrader is aimed at active and professional traders who focus on futures. Its tools and per-contract pricing are designed for day traders and scalpers who value precision and speed. Because futures use leverage, they are not suitable for everyone.
The platform is also ideal for algorithmic traders who want to develop and deploy automated strategies. The backtesting and market replay features further enhance its appeal for traders who prioritize strategy development and testing.
Because futures fall outside the U.S. PDT rule, U.S.-based traders can trade frequently without a $25,000 account balance. This is not relevant for traders in the Netherlands.
Advantages
- Futures-Focused Platform: NinjaTrader's platform offers advanced charting, algorithmic trading, and backtesting tools for active futures traders.
- Per-Contract Commissions: On the Lifetime plan ($1,499 one-time), commissions start at $0.09 per micro futures contract per side, before exchange, clearing and NFA fees.
- No Minimum Deposit: The absence of a minimum deposit requirement makes it accessible to traders with varying levels of capital.
- Outside the PDT Rule: Futures fall outside the U.S. Pattern Day Trading rule (mainly relevant for U.S.-based traders).
- Custom Indicators and Tools: The platform supports extensive customization, allowing traders to tailor their experience to their specific needs.
Disadvantages
- No Native Mac Desktop App: NinjaTrader lists no Mac version of its desktop platform; Mac users use the web platform.
- Steep Learning Curve: The platform's advanced features can be overwhelming for beginners, requiring time and effort to master.
- Paid Market Data Subscriptions: Access to live market data requires additional monthly fees, which can increase overall trading costs.
- Futures Only and Leverage Risk: NinjaTrader focuses on futures, with no stock trading. Because of leverage you can lose more than your initial investment.
Conclusion
NinjaTrader is a powerful platform for active and professional futures traders. Its charting tools, algorithmic trading capabilities, and per-contract commissions appeal to traders who value precision and cost awareness.
However, the steep learning curve, market data costs and the lack of a native Mac desktop app may be drawbacks for some users. The focus on futures may also limit its appeal.
Overall, NinjaTrader suits experienced traders who are willing to learn the platform. Futures use leverage and you can lose more than your initial investment. Include the recent CFTC and NFA penalties in your assessment.
Editorial review
